Psoriasis - Understanding the Most Wide Spread Chronic Dermatitis

Submitted by: Jane F Robinson

Psoriasis as a word derived from the Greek word "psora" - "itch".

Psoriasis is the most wide spread chronic dermatitis. According to statistics, about 2-3% of the total population of the Earth has psoriasis - approximately 120 - 180 million people! For instance: Canada - about 1 million people, Great Britain - 1 million, Scandinavian countries - 2 million people, France - 2 million people and the U.S.A. - 7 million people.

There are countries, where psoriasis is encountered less frequently - for example Japan, China - less than 1% of the population.

Psoriasis is also more frequently recorded in locations of a moderate and cold climate and it is relatively less frequent in the tropical countries.

In rural areas the frequency of psoriasis is usually 3-4 times less frequent than in the urban areas.

Psoriasis appears on skin as inflamed lesions, peeling and scales. The scales can be easily removed, and beneath them there lays an yet denser scale. In addition to the skin psoriasis may as well strike the nails and joints.

The average cycle of shedding of normal skin cells occurs approximately in 4 weeks, with psoriasis this process takes only 4-5 days. The course of psoriasis usually has a sharply expressed seasonality. Psoriasis can be located in any sections of the skin, but predominantly the plaques are located symmetrically on the knees and elbows, on scalp and on the skin of the rest of the body.

There are 3 main phenomena’s or symptoms of psoriasis, which can be detected with a scraping of the psoriatic plaques:

- the "stearin spot" phenomena - with the scraping of the surface of the psoriatic plaque there will appear silvery-white scales, that resemble stearin – a tasteless and odorless substance used for the manufacturing of the soaps etc.

- the "terminal film" phenomena (aka the "psoriatic film" phenomena) - with the further scraping of the psoriatic plaque underneath the abundant silvery-white scales there appears a translucent tender skin, that resembles a film

- the "point hemorrhage" phenomena (aka the "blood dew" phenomena) - with the further scraping of the plaque there will appear a point hemorrhage - tiny dots of blood

Psoriasis is a chronic condition, which stays with a person for their whole life, and is accompanied by the variation of flare-ups and remissions. Psoriasis is a non-contagious disease.

Psoriasis develops due to many factors, with the prevailing importance of genetic factors.

Psoriasis is not fatal, but it causes loads of problems for the sufferer. Psoriasis may bring serious complications; it causes commonplace inconveniences, which start dominating the life and the thoughts of a person and affect the quality of life. Usually these are cosmetic, which limit the choice of the selection of hair-do, outfit, and the behavior. People with psoriasis often experience inferiority complexes. Being bothered by their appearance, they may become "people in a box": seldom in public, wear maximally closed outfits etc.

Countless famous people, including Ben Franklin, Henry Ford, Joseph Stalin and many others had psoriasis. In the 1930’s, Winston Churchill, who as well had psoriasis for many years, proposed a golden monument for the person, who cures this disease.

Scalp Psoriasis – 4 Ways to Treat That Itchy Scalp

Submitted by: Cyril Wee

Psoriasis is condition wherein excessive production of skin cells in which it causes the skin to look red, scaly and plaque like skin. It usually appears in knees, elbows and scalp. When psoriasis develops on the scalp it is then called Scalp Psoriasis.

Scalp Psoriasis can be troublesome to many, it range from a dandruff-like scales or to thick adherent plaques. It usually appears on the scalp and extends to the hairline and sometimes runs to the face, and sometimes at the back of the ears.

The usual symptoms of this condition can either be severe or mild. These are the symptoms that we can say that a person has it. Reddish plaque, it ranges from being barely noticeable and up to thick and inflamed scalp. Silvery/white scale often develops and that people usually thinks that as dandruff. Having a dry scalp can also be noticeable which tends to crack and bleed. Itching is probably the most common symptom of this disease. Itchiness of the scalp can range from mild itch to bothersome. Bleeding tends to develop due to the excessive scratching of the scalp due to itchiness.

These symptoms could either appear one by one or sometimes it goes together. Symptoms vary on different people, some have mild and some might develop severe symptoms.

For a safe and effective Psoriasis Treatment, you need to consult your dermatologist. Treatment regimen may vary depending on the severity of the disease.

1. Mild – patients having mild symptoms of the disease usually has superficial scaling, thick scaly plaques are usually absent. The preliminary treatment for this is to use tar or ketaconazole shampoos. After being treated with tar or ketaconazole shampoo, it is then followed by scalp solutions of betamethasone valerate. Calcipotriene solution can be an alternate for steroid topical cream if inflammation is absent.

2. Severe – thick adherent scaly plaques are present on patients having severe conditions. In order for the antipsoriatic solution to be effective, it is very important to remove the scaly plaque first. Otherwise, it will not have an interaction to skin.

3. Removal of Thick Scales – in removing the thick scales on the scalp, the following steps are needed. First, wet the scalp properly. Then with either a coconut oil based tar and salicylic acid or 10% salicylic acid in mineral oil, cover the entire scalp with either of the solutions. Covered and wrapped with plastic, let it stay in your scalp overnight. Lastly, using a tar shampoo, shampoo you hair in order for the scales to be removed.

4. Topical Applications – after the scales have been removed, using calcipotriene with betamethoasone dipropionate, apply it into your scalp to keep and control the condition.

These are just simple ways for Psoriasis Treatment. There are still many ways to treat this condition. Proper hair hygiene is still the best way to ensure a healthy scalp. If these steps still does not alleviate or manage the symptoms of the condition, it is best to consult your doctor for a proper medical intervention.
