Scalp Psoriasis – 4 Ways to Treat That Itchy Scalp

Psoriasis is condition wherein excessive production of skin cells in which it causes the skin to look red, scaly and plaque like skin. It usually appears in knees, elbows and scalp. When psoriasis develops on the scalp it is then called Scalp Psoriasis.

Scalp Psoriasis can be troublesome to many, it range from a dandruff-like scales or to thick adherent plaques. It usually appears on the scalp and extends to the hairline and sometimes runs to the face, and sometimes at the back of the ears.

The usual symptoms of this condition can either be severe or mild. These are the symptoms that we can say that a person has it. Reddish plaque, it ranges from being barely noticeable and up to thick and inflamed scalp. Silvery/white scale often develops and that people usually thinks that as dandruff. Having a dry scalp can also be noticeable which tends to crack and bleed. Itching is probably the most common symptom of this disease. Itchiness of the scalp can range from mild itch to bothersome. Bleeding tends to develop due to the excessive scratching of the scalp due to itchiness.

These symptoms could either appear one by one or sometimes it goes together. Symptoms vary on different people, some have mild and some might develop severe symptoms.

For a safe and effective Psoriasis Treatment, you need to consult your dermatologist. Treatment regimen may vary depending on the severity of the disease.

1. Mild – patients having mild symptoms of the disease usually has superficial scaling, thick scaly plaques are usually absent. The preliminary treatment for this is to use tar or ketaconazole shampoos. After being treated with tar or ketaconazole shampoo, it is then followed by scalp solutions of betamethasone valerate. Calcipotriene solution can be an alternate for steroid topical cream if inflammation is absent.

2. Severe – thick adherent scaly plaques are present on patients having severe conditions. In order for the antipsoriatic solution to be effective, it is very important to remove the scaly plaque first. Otherwise, it will not have an interaction to skin.

3. Removal of Thick Scales – in removing the thick scales on the scalp, the following steps are needed. First, wet the scalp properly. Then with either a coconut oil based tar and salicylic acid or 10% salicylic acid in mineral oil, cover the entire scalp with either of the solutions. Covered and wrapped with plastic, let it stay in your scalp overnight. Lastly, using a tar shampoo, shampoo you hair in order for the scales to be removed.

4. Topical Applications – after the scales have been removed, using calcipotriene with betamethoasone dipropionate, apply it into your scalp to keep and control the condition.

These are just simple ways for Psoriasis Treatment. There are still many ways to treat this condition. Proper hair hygiene is still the best way to ensure a healthy scalp. If these steps still does not alleviate or manage the symptoms of the condition, it is best to consult your doctor for a proper medical intervention.
